How it works
Four decisions that keep the shade where you put it
Most of the two years spent on Model 2 went into the parts you touch: the arm, the knuckle and the cable.

A counterweight instead of springs
The arm pivots on a brass knuckle and a steel weight sits in the handle behind it. Move the shade and the weight balances it, so the lamp holds any angle without a spring to stretch or a knob to tighten. The handle is also where you hold it, so you never touch the hot shade.

Light where the page is
The domed shade is spun from one sheet of steel and painted white inside. It throws a circle of warm light about 45 cm across onto the desk at working height and keeps the bulb out of your eyes when you sit up.

The cable goes through the arm
Model 1 had its cable looped outside the arm, where it caught on books and frayed at the joint. Model 2 threads it through the post and the arm and out at the cap, so the only cable you see runs from the base to the wall.

Built to be taken apart
Four hex screws hold the lamp together and one key undoes all of them. The shade, the arm, the base, the cable and the knuckle are each sold on their own, and we keep making them for at least fifteen years after the last lamp is sold.

Four steps down to 10 percent.
The in-line dimmer drops from full brightness to a low glow that lights the keyboard and not the room. The bulb keeps the same warm colour on every step.
Finishes
Three powder coats, one brass
Each finish is baked on in batches of about 120 lamps. The knuckle and cap are unlacquered brass on every lamp.

Can I use my own bulb?
Yes. The socket is a standard E26. Use an LED bulb of up to 9 W and no taller than 14 cm, so it stays inside the shade.
Which mount should I choose?
The weighted base stands anywhere and can move between rooms. The clamp frees the desk surface and gives you a little more reach over a deep desk. You can buy the other mount later as a part.
Does the brass tarnish?
Yes. The knuckle and cap are left unlacquered, so they darken where your hand touches them. A brass polish brings back the shine if you prefer it.
What happens if something breaks?
Write to us with a photo. Inside the warranty we send the part free. After it, every part is sold on this site, and the hex key in the box is the only tool you need.
