Where to put a desk lamp

A few measurements that stop glare on screens and shadows across the page.

A small writing desk with a yellow chair and a floor lamp in a corner of a room

Put it on the opposite side to your writing hand

If you write with your right hand, place the lamp on the left. Your hand then moves away from the light, so it never throws a shadow over the line you are writing. For keyboard work either side is fine.

Keep the bulb below eye level

Sit up straight and look ahead. If you can see the bulb inside the shade, lower the arm until the rim hides it. On Model 2 that usually means the shade cap sits 40 to 45 cm above the desk.

Light the desk, not the screen

Aim the shade so the edge of its circle of light stops just in front of your screen. Light that falls on the screen washes out the picture and makes you turn the screen brighter.

Leave a hand’s width behind the base

The weighted base needs a little room for the arm to swing back. If your desk is against a wall, the clamp version lets the post sit right at the edge.
