About Ferrule
We make one lamp, and we keep it working.
Ferrule is a workshop of five people. We design, assemble, ship and repair one desk lamp.
Timeline
2019: Model 1
The first lamp: a white spring-balanced arm with a conical shade, assembled at a kitchen table. We made 3,400 of them.
2022: The repair bench
Model 1 lamps started coming back with worn cables. We set up a bench to repair them and started selling every part on its own.
2024: Trade-in
Owners can send a Model 1 back for credit. We rebuild each one and sell it again with a two-year warranty.
2026: Model 2
A counterweighted arm, the cable inside it, three finishes and a ten-year warranty. Everything we learned at the repair bench went into it.
Why one product
Making one lamp means every hour goes into the same object. When a part fails, we see it within weeks, change it, and the next batch is better. When a customer writes about a wobble or a hum, the person who answers has assembled hundreds of the same lamp.
Where it is made
The shades are spun and the knuckles are machined by two family firms within a day’s drive of the workshop. Painting, assembly, testing, packing and repairs happen in our own space, and every lamp is signed by the person who built it.
What we do not do
We do not run sales, and the price of a lamp only changes when the cost of making it does. Refurbished Model 1 lamps and the occasional part with a small paint mark are the only things sold below their usual price.
