How the three finishes are painted

Graphite, Oxide and Fern are powder coats baked at 200 °C. Why we chose three, and why there is no white.

Model 2 comes in three powder-coated finishes. Powder coating is a dry paint sprayed with an electric charge and then baked, so it melts into one even skin. It is thicker and harder than wet paint and does not chip when the shade knocks against a shelf.

Why these three

We wanted colours that look right next to unlacquered brass as it darkens. Graphite is nearly black with a little warmth in it. Oxide is the red of old iron oxide paint. Fern is a deep green that reads as grey in low light.

Why not white

Model 1 was white, and white showed every fingerprint on the arm, where you hold the lamp most. The inside of every Model 2 shade is still white, because white reflects the most light onto the desk.

Small batches

Each colour is sprayed in batches of about 120 lamps. That is why one combination is sometimes out of stock for a few weeks, as the Fern clamp is now.
